This Saturday is Small Business Saturday! You know, that holiday American Express made up in 2010 to try to get people to spend more using their AmEx Cards. The story behind it is that mega-stores and large corporations have their day on Black Friday while E-commerce sites had Cyber Monday, but all that post-Turkey Day shopping love skipped small businesses. Enter Small Business Saturday, an attempt to rectify the grand injustice that is capitalism.
Normally we’re against created holidays (I haven’t bought my mom a Mother’s Day card in years in protest of that one), but Small Business Saturday is actually a pretty cool idea. Small businesses help provide diversity and give you more choice as a consumer. They’re also a great source of innovation, helping to push boundaries by meeting the needs of customers in ways that bigger institutions cannot. We’re all about supporting small ventures; heck, our founder has started a handful in the Chattanooga area himself, including Smart Furniture.
So, instead of going out and buying all of your gifts at Amazon or Wal-Mart this weekend, spend a little at a small business. Chances are they’ll appreciate it more – we know we do. If you’re in the Chattanooga area, our studio across from Greenlife will be open all day, and if you can’t make it to the store, the website never closes. Whether you make it to our store or not, remember to support a small business near you.
