We all know that instinctively. We buy good computers, good running shoes, high-quality ice cream makers. Why? We don’t want frozen computer screens, sore knees, or soupy ice cream – so we get tools that will do the job. The results speak for themselves.
Do yourself a favor and think of your task chair the same way. You don’t want a sore back or neck – so don’t settle for a chair that keeps “uncomfortable” status quo.
Sometimes, sitting down hurts worse than being on your feet all day. Many people who sit at desks for any extended period of time can identify with that statement.
So … who needs a better task chair?
1. Office Professionals
Let’s just lump a whole lot of jobs into this category. I know, I’m painting with a broad brush. But that’s a result of necessity, not intellectual laziness. Administrative assistants, insurance underwriters, call center reps, 9-5 desk workers. Fill in the blank. If you work at a desk, you need a better chair. All the folks who already have better task chairs are nodding their heads right now.
2. Day Traders
Y’all pull some long hours sometimes. But you work at home and it can be easy to just stick with what you’ve got. But if you have a sore neck, if your back hurts, if you lose circulation in your legs after a while, if your chair makes you sweat … it’s time for a better task chair, guys. You’ll concentrate better (and for a longer period of time) and feel less beat up at the end of your day.
You’re working on a project. It’s due tomorrow morning. It’s 9 P.M. and you’re not stopping until it’s exactly right. Your butt is sore and your neck has a crick in it. Let’s face it: as nice as your desk chair looks, on those longer days your stylistic choice is supremely uncomfortable. The good news is that style and substance aren’t mutually exclusive.
Whether you game for a few hours every night or go on red bull-fueled binges (just two more levels….), chances are you’re sitting in that chair after you’ve already sat at a desk all day at work. That’ll wreck your back and neck pronto if you don’t have the right chair for the task. Give your body a break and you just might be more effective as a player.

In The Writing Life, Annie Dillard tells about how she’s worked for days for one good sentence. But sometimes the muse speaks – and you can’t stop until you’ve gotten it all down on paper. What are we looking for in a good task chair?
You basically have three options.
1. Get the cheapest task chair you can. It’ll be painful to sit in for more than 2 hours.
2. Get a solid chair with basic adjustments for under $500 that will be OK for a while but will wear on you over time.
3. Get a well-engineered, highly adjustable chair for around $900 or so. It’ll actually be helpful to your posture and you’ll probably notice a difference and reduction of pain over time. That’s been my experience with my back and neck while sitting in my Embody.
And guess what? Over the span of a year, your “expensive” chair will only cost you 41 cents per day. It’s worth it to save your body the wear and tear.
